NHL Trade Rumors: Leafs, Oilers, Rangers Updates

January 23, 2026
in NBA

As the NHL trade deadline approaches on March 6, teams are ramping up their preparations. Insider reports reveal key developments for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, and New York Rangers, with injuries and roster needs driving the conversation.

Maple Leafs Actively Shopping for Defensemen

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been monitoring the defense trade market for weeks, and recent injuries have only intensified their search. Oliver Ekman-Larsson exited Wednesday’s game with an injury, while there are concerns that Brandon Carlo may have tweaked something despite finishing the contest. Updates on Carlo are expected Friday.

The situation is compounded by Chris Tanev’s uncertain timeline, with speculation that his season could be over. Management has been conducting due diligence on potential targets, including pending UFA Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets—a reliable, known quantity that fits well.

A bigger swing could involve Dougie Hamilton from the New Jersey Devils, though his $9 million cap hit through two more seasons complicates matters. The Devils would likely need to retain salary, and even then, cap constraints make it challenging. Toronto is believed to be on Hamilton’s approved trade list, keeping the possibility alive. With limited assets, more realistic options like Schenn appear higher on the priority list.

A resurgent Leafs team is firmly back in the playoff race and desperately needs to shore up the blue line.

Sweden’s Growing Olympic Injury Concerns

Ekman-Larsson’s injury adds to Sweden’s mounting problems ahead of the Olympics, though early reports suggest he should still participate. Head coach Sam Hallam is planning without Jonas Brodin (out 6-8 weeks) and Leo Carlsson (out 3-5 weeks). Brodin’s absence is particularly significant as one of the league’s premier shutdown defenders.

Replacements will be named closer to the Games. Victor Hedman, Erik Karlsson, Gabe Landeskog, Joel Eriksson Ek, and William Nylander are also currently sidelined but expected to recover in time.

Oilers Targeting Top-Nine Forward Help

Edmonton held pro scouting meetings last week and identified a list of top-nine forwards to pursue via scouting and trade discussions. GM Stan Bowman has initiated preliminary conversations with other teams, though nothing is imminent due to limited sellers in a parity-filled league.

Most activity is expected post-Olympics. An internal debate centers on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ best position—center or wing alongside Connor McDavid—with more wingers likely available on the market tipping the scales.

Panthers Exploring All Upgrade Options

After a strong recovery from their early-season struggles, the Florida Panthers have slipped again and currently sit five points out of a playoff spot in the tightly bunched Eastern Conference.

Key injuries have plagued them all year. Matthew Tkachuk recently returned, but Seth Jones remains about a month from full health. GM Bill Zito has increased outreach to gauge potential upgrades without targeting a specific need. Patience is the approach—no panic trades—while cap challenges persist with Aleksander Barkov’s hit needing to stay on the books for a hoped-for playoff return.

Rangers Update: J.T. Miller Not Moving

Rangers GM Chris Drury met individually with players holding full no-move clauses to discuss the organization’s re-tooling direction. Those players include J.T. Miller, Vladislav Gavrikov, Igor Shesterkin, Adam Fox, and Mika Zibanejad—none of whom have expressed interest in waiving.

Despite speculation, captain J.T. Miller intends to stay and ride out the re-tool. Drury has no plans to ask him to waive. Artemi Panarin, a pending UFA with a full no-move, has been informed the Rangers will not re-sign him and will work with him on a trade destination before the deadline.
