The Steelers brotherhood just got shattered. Former captain Joey Porter Sr. went nuclear on Ben Roethlisberger, calling him out as a terrible teammate—and an even worse person.
The Damning Verdict That Changes Everything
On Cameron Heyward’s “Not Just Football” podcast, Porter didn’t hold back: “The s— that he did is foul of all foul. He’s not a good teammate… Anybody in the Steelers building knows that.”
They won Super Bowl XL together. Porter admits he loved his quarterback because he delivered rings. But love the player? Respect the man? Absolutely not.
Rookie Big Ben’s Arrogant Refusal That Infuriated Vets
Porter dropped a locker-room story that still burns: As a rookie, Roethlisberger flat-out refused to sign memorabilia for veteran teammates’ families—something every player did without question.
- When he snubbed Chris Hoke, Porter personally forced him to sign it.
- When he did the same to Aaron Smith? Porter called a meeting: “You’re a rookie… You can’t tell my vets you’re too cool to sign for them.”
“Who the hell is too cool to sign for your teammate? I’m not a fan,” Porter fired.
The Captain ‘C’ He Never Earned
Porter revealed Roethlisberger was simply handed the captain’s patch—no vote required.
“We voted to be captains,” Porter said. “He came in the era where they just gave you the ‘C’—because if he wasn’t a captain, he’d probably have a hissy fit. But nobody’s going to vote for him as captain because he don’t have no captain quality.”
Breaking the Brotherhood
Porter also ripped Roethlisberger (and James Harrison) for going public with criticism of Mike Tomlin on their podcasts. “Out of anybody that should talk, he should never grab a microphone and really talk Steeler business.”
The silence was protection. The rings bought loyalty. But now the truth is out—and it’s ugly.
Roethlisberger’s camp has not responded. The legacy of a two-time Super Bowl winner just took a massive hit. Was the greatness worth the locker-room poison? Steelers Nation is debating—and it’s getting heated.
