Flyers Approach to the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline
The NHL’s Olympic trade freeze begins on February 4 and lifts on February 22, shifting focus to the March 6 trade deadline. For the Philadelphia Flyers, under GM Daniel Briere, the deadline is likely to be quiet unless a high-end young talent becomes available.
The Flyers have spent recent years rebuilding, accumulating draft picks and prospects rather than moving established players. With no high-profile pending unrestricted free agents on the roster, Philadelphia isn’t positioned as a seller this season.
Elias Pettersson Not a Target for Philadelphia
Despite online speculation linking Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson to the Flyers, multiple team sources have firmly denied any interest. The organization does not view Pettersson as the type of core player capable of leading them to a championship.
Additional hurdles include Pettersson’s full no-trade clause and potential reluctance to join Philadelphia. Interestingly, when Vancouver discussed Quinn Hughes before trading him to Minnesota, the Canucks reportedly avoided serious talks with the Flyers—possibly to prevent a reunion with coach Rick Tocchet.
That said, the Flyers remain aggressive buyers for the right opportunity. If a high-impact player under 30 with long-term fit becomes available, Philadelphia believes it has the assets to compete in those discussions.
Rasmus Ristolainen Expected to Stay
Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, long a trade rumor subject with one year left at a $5.1 million cap hit, is not being actively shopped. Sources indicate the Flyers expect him to finish the season in Philadelphia.
Ristolainen provides necessary depth for the playoff push, especially with injuries testing the blue line. The team lacks reliable AHL call-up options, and his injury history—including triceps surgery that delayed his season—has cooled external interest. In 13 games this year, he has recorded three assists.
Other Flyers Notes
- Rodrigo Abols Injury Update: The forward’s ankle injury against the Rangers looked serious but is not season-ending. Initial fracture concerns have eased, with further tests pending. Abols had eight points in his prior 13 games.
- Prospect Spotlight: 2024 second-round pick Jack Berglund impressed at the World Juniors, posting 10 points and serving as Sweden’s captain. He could join AHL Lehigh Valley later this season depending on his Swedish club’s playoff run.
As the deadline nears, the Flyers appear content to stand pat unless the perfect addition emerges, prioritizing their ongoing rebuild while staying competitive.
