From NFL glory to a cold jail cell accused of savage murder. Former New York Jets first-round pick Darron Lee, once celebrated as Ohio State’s defensive hero, now sits behind bars without bond—facing a first-degree murder charge that could carry the death penalty.
The Gruesome Discovery That Shocked Investigators
On February 5, first responders rushed to a rented home in Ooltewah, Tennessee, for a CPR call in progress. What they found was a nightmare: Gabriella Perpétuo, Lee’s girlfriend of roughly 10 days in the home, already dead from horrific injuries.
Autopsy findings revealed blunt force trauma homicide: a broken neck, severe brain injury, stab wounds to her abdomen and legs, a human bite mark on her shoulder, black eyes with heavy swelling, and a massive bruise on her head. Dried blood covered her face and neck. Shockingly, her pants had no cuts—suggesting they were put on after the stabbing.
Lee’s Story Crumbles Under Blood Evidence
Darron Lee told deputies his girlfriend “might have fallen in the shower.” But crime scene photos told a different story: blood spattered in multiple rooms, cleaning supplies next to scrubbed-but-still-positive stains, and clear signs of attempted cover-up.
Lee himself had facial injuries, lacerated hands, chest wounds, and blood inside his phone case. Alcohol, narcotics, and a gun were found at the scene.
A Pattern of Violence?
Prosecutors revealed Lee was already on probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery, plus attempted batteries in Ohio. District Attorney Coty Wamp called the case “capital eligible” and argued Lee’s shower-fall explanation “doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.”
From Sugar Bowl MVP to Murder Defendant
Just a decade ago, Lee was the defensive MVP of the 2015 Sugar Bowl and the Jets’ 20th overall pick in 2016. He played 58 NFL games across New York, Kansas City, and Buffalo. Now, at 31, his next court appearance is a preliminary hearing on March 9—with his freedom and possibly his life on the line.
This isn’t just another athlete arrest. It’s a heartbreaking tragedy for Gabriella Perpétuo’s family and a stark reminder of how far glory can fall. Will prosecutors seek the ultimate punishment? The evidence looks damning—but justice has to run its course.
